The Reasons Top Figures Are Choosing US Multi-Club 'Speedboat' Instead of Football Association 'Tanker' Structures?

On Wednesday, Bay Collective disclosed the appointment of Van Ginhoven, England's managerial lead under Sarina Wiegman, to serve as their overseer of worldwide women's football activities. This new multi-team ownership group, with Bay FC of San Francisco as its initial addition among its holdings, has a history in hiring individuals from the English FA.

The appointment earlier this year of Kay Cossington, the prominent former FA technical director, as the chief executive acted as a clear statement from this organization. Cossington understands female football comprehensively and now has gathered a leadership team with profound insight of women’s football history and laden with professional background.

Van Ginhoven marks the third central staffer of Wiegman’s setup to leave this year, following the chief executive departing before the European Championships and assistant coach, Veurink, moving on to take up the role of manager of the Dutch national team, but her decision came sooner.

Leaving has been a surprising shift, yet “I’d taken my decision to leave the FA well in advance”, Van Ginhoven says. “The terms lasting four years, similar to Veurink and Wiegman did. Upon their extension, I had already said I was uncertain if I would do the same. I had accepted the thought that post-Euros I wouldn’t be part of England any more.”

The tournament became a sentimental competition as a result. “I recall distinctly, discussing with Sarina when I disclosed of my choice and then we said: ‘Our ultimate aspiration, how amazing would it be if we were to win the European Championship?’ In reality, it’s not like dreams come true every day but, against the odds, it actually happened.”

Dressed in orange, Van Ginhoven has divided loyalties following her stint with the English team, where she was part of claiming two Euros in a row and was a part of the coaching setup during the Dutch victory the 2017 Euros.

“The national team will forever have a special place in my heart. So, it will be difficult, particularly now knowing that the players will be arriving for national team duty shortly,” she says. “Whenever the two nations face off, which side do I back? Right now I'm in Dutch colors, but tomorrow it’s white.”

In a speedboat, you can pivot and accelerate swiftly. With a compact team such as ours, that’s easily done.

The club was not initially considered as the strategic expert determined that it was time for a change, however the pieces fell into place at the right time. Cossington began assembling the team and mutual beliefs proved essential.

“Essentially upon meeting we met we experienced an instant connection,” states she. “We were instantly aligned. We've discussed extensively regarding multiple aspects related to developing women's football and our shared vision for the right approach.”

These executives are among several to make a move from well-known positions within European football for a blank sheet of paper in the US. Atlético Madrid’s women’s technical director, González, has been announced as the organization's worldwide sports director.

“I felt strongly drawn in the deep faith regarding the strength of women's football,” González comments. “I have known Kay Cossington for an extended period; during my tenure at Fifa, she served as England's technical director, and it’s easy to make these decisions when you know you are going to be surrounded by colleagues who drive you.”

The depth of knowledge within their group distinguishes them, says Van Ginhoven, as Bay Collective among a number recent multi-team projects that have started in recent years. “It's a standout feature of our approach. Different approaches are acceptable, but we are firm in our belief in incorporating football expertise,” she adds. “Each of us have traveled a path in female football, throughout our careers.”

According to their online statement, the mission of this group is to support and lead an advanced and lasting environment within female football clubs, built on proven methods for the diverse needs of women in sport. Doing that, with collective agreement, with no need to make the case for specific initiatives, provides great freedom.

“I compare it with moving from a large ship to a fast boat,” remarks Van Ginhoven. “You're journeying across unmapped territories – a common Dutch expression, I don’t know if it translates – and you just need to rely on your individual understanding and experience to make the right decision. You can pivot and accelerate rapidly using a speedboat. Within a compact team such as ours, it's straightforward to accomplish.”

González continues: “With this opportunity, we have a completely white sheet of paper to work from. In my view, our mission focuses on impacting football more extensively and that clean start permits you to undertake any direction you choose, adhering to football's guidelines. That’s the beauty of our collective project.”

The aspirations are significant, those in leading roles are saying the things players and fans are eager to hear and it will be fascinating to monitor the progress of this organization, the team and other teams that may join.
